Ants in the house are the dread of many houses in summer leaving many people to fear the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they know the summer will bring
Only the unfortunates who have suffered it will appreciate the true horror of flying ants in their own homes.
Having an infestation of basic wingless ants is bad enough but when they go through their annual mating phase the situation can become intolerable.
Ants will form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our houses and these colonies will continue for many years to come if left untreated becoming progressively more troublesome each year.
Our homes are warm and dry and make the ideal places for a thriving ant colony; even solid asphalt floor is not a problem to and ant colony.
Our central heating systems raises their metabolism even in the winter months and my earliest ant job was on my birthday, which is in January!
Ants need a sandy soil and there are lots of areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant infestations than most, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as hot ant properties.
Unfortunately it is during their mating time that they are most troublesome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this tends to be pretty regularly around the third or fourth week in July.
Ants mate in flight and sometime around mid-summer the colony produces flying immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate on the wing. Many thousands of these flying ants are produced by each and nests tend to time their production in order to mate with ants from neighbouring colonies.
Often this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will usually continue for about seven to ten although smaller releases will continue throughout most of June, July & August.
Unfortunately when the colony is under the floor of the property the results can be dreadful, literally thousands of flying are released into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they go towards the light.
This can be unbelievably distressing for some people leading to extreme emotional distress to the extent that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually left their house to escape the plague of ants which they know will inevitably come each summer.
The colder summers of recent years have meant that ant problems were down on earlier but ants appear to have a way of catching up and 2010 could possibly be a particularly troublesome year.
Most people who have this problem opt for DIY solutions with powders from hardware outlets etc but mostly these efforts do not succeed as they are not getting to the heart of the matter which is the nest itself, hidden away safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.
Fortunately for most people the answer.
At Harrier Pest Control and Prevention (subject to satisfactory site) we are able to cure this problem and give an extendable three year guarantee.
The process which is done mainly from the outside of the dwelling, is totally safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling small holes into the cavity walls of the house, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an impenetrable barrier over which the ants cannot go and together with a precautionary internal spray treatment (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the problem under control.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter are left open so it is simply a matter of topping up the wall cavities every three years to extend the life of the guarantee in 3 year periods.
This procedure is best done out in the early spring however it can be done at any time of year.
As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the usual price until May 30 2010. Whilst we normally cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be reflected in the cost.
